Heroin Vaccines: A Ray of Hope for Addicts

Heroin is a popular illegal recreational drug that falls into the category of opiates. Opiates are a class of drugs that are derived from poppy plants. Heroin is produced from morphine which is extracted from the seeds of the poppy plant and can be highly addictive leading to physical dependency.

Heroin is one of the quickest acting drugs which makes it very addictive. With time however, the body gets used to the drug resulting in the need for increased intake along with withdrawal symptoms such as muscle pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

In order to reduce the amount of heroin consumption in the world, researchers have been working on the development of a heroin vaccine which will reduce dependency on the drug.

This move was done in light of the current heroin abuse situation in Kettering. It has been estimated that more than 20 million people around the world are addicted to heroin. This has put them at risk of potentially fatal diseases such as HIV which is transferred through shared syringes. Drug relapse is relatively high in heroin and is another reason why there is a need for the development of a heroin vaccine.

Heroin

A survey conducted by the Office of National Drug Control Policy found that while most heroin addicts are older, chronic users, this substance has gained popularity amongst teens and young adults. This is an increase from the number of users in the 1970s and 80s to now where around 600,000 Americans use heroin.

Another reason for the growing rise in the number of users is the variety of options for the way heroin can be consumed. 2 decades earlier, injecting was the only choice available, but the availability of high quality heroin makes snorting and smoking feasible options. The pleasant feel of the heroin high is usually accompanied by the nasty feeling of nausea, vomiting and itching.

Current Treatment Methods

While the vaccine is still in its development stages, heroin addiction is increasing by the day. Traditional inpatient and outpatient programs in a Kettering dual diagnosis rehab center prove effective in treating addicts. In fact, even if human testing proves to be successful, addicts would still have to rely on professional rehabilitation to go completely drug free because:

  1. The vaccine only kills cravings for heroin and not other drugs,
  2. The heroin still remains in the blood stream to do its damage

If you or a loved is facing heroin addiction issues, seek professional help immediately.
